Dr. Julie Emmerman’s private practice is open to late teens and adults. She works with individuals and couples by creating a safe, empathic environment where tools for addressing life events and stresses are explored.
By successfully creating a trusted alliance with each person, she facilitates her client's ability to see and make choices that feel compatible with their wants and needs. Clients come to Dr. Emmerman with a wide variety of concerns. Examples include anxiety, depression, personal or work relationship difficulty, chronic or acute illnesses, addictions, self esteem, abusive relationships, childhood sexual or emotional abuse, addictive disorders, body image, confusion about life direction, stress management, anger management, and various phobias. She also works with clients undergoing life transitions such as new parents, newly divorced or remarried men and women, those caring for elderly parents, and individuals experiencing issues related to aging.
Dr. Emmerman respects and gives credibility to the reasons why a person's current coping strategies developed and exist as they currently do. Her approach helps clients gently shift toward new strategies that are more timely, effective, and healthful for the circumstances at hand. Because clients vary widely in terms of learning styles, comfort levels, and experience in exploring personal growth, she has a variety of tools to draw upon and tends to connect easily with each person. Most often, a variety of insight oriented approaches (Gestalt, Narrative, Psychodynamic, Existential, and Contemplative techniques) are used in combination with practical cognitive behavioral exercises. Metaphors are frequently incorporated as a learning tool as well as humor when appropriate.
Dr. Emmerman has extensive and ongoing training in multicultural issues and social justice theories regarding power and privilege. Her practice is a respectful and welcoming place for all individuals regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, physical ability, gender or age.
All sessions are strictly confidential and 60 minutes in duration.
